The teddy was invented in 1910, but wasn't actually called a "teddy" until 1924. The theory that it has something to do with teddy bears (and thus indirectly with Theodore Roosevelt) has been advanced many times (even during the period), but never proven.

Originally they were called "camiknickers", so giving them some other name seems like a fairly obvious idea.

Agreed. Sometimes when you mash two words together, the result is elegant. Other times, it's hilarious or just plain awkward.

I'd count camiknickers in the last group.
